In discus and hammer athletics sessions, coaches cover a range of fundamental aspects to improve the athletes' skills and performance. They focus on teaching proper throwing techniques, including footwork, balance, and coordination. Athletes learn how to generate power and speed through efficient body movements, such as rotational motion and hip drive. Additionally, athletes are guided on how to optimise their grip, release, and flight paths for maximum distance and accuracy. Training sessions often include drills and feedback to refine technique and enhance overall performance in these challenging throwing events.

Hammer & Discus Specialist Classes (school Years 6–11)
Our Hammer & Discus Specialist Classes are designed for athletes in Years 6–11 who want to develop their throwing skills and improve their performance in the throws events.
The training day is split into two focused sessions, allowing athletes to work in depth on both hammer and discus. Each session will focus on key technical elements such as grip, stance, balance, rotation, and release, helping athletes build strong fundamentals and improve consistency in their throws.
Athletes will take part in a combination of technical drills, throwing practice, and strength-based exercises designed to develop coordination, power, and control.
These classes are also ideal for athletes preparing for the outdoor season and upcoming competitions, giving them the opportunity to refine their technique and gain confidence in both events.
What athletes will work on:
Hammer throwing technique and rotational movement
Discus throwing technique and release mechanics
Balance, coordination, and timing
Strength and power for throwing events
Our goal is to help athletes build strong technical foundations, improve their throwing performance, and prepare confidently for competition.
